The key difference: deductible structure

Trupanion uses a per-condition deductible — you pay the deductible once for each new condition, then Trupanion covers 90% forever. This works well for chronic conditions like allergies or diabetes that recur every year.

Embrace uses an annual deductible — you pay once per year, then get reimbursed for everything covered. This works better for pets with multiple one-time issues in a year.

Example: Your dog has three separate issues in one year — an ear infection, a leg injury, and a stomach problem. With Trupanion (per-condition $500 deductible), you pay $1,500 before coverage kicks in. With Embrace (annual $500 deductible), you pay $500 total for the year.

Orthopedic waiting period

Trupanion covers orthopedic conditions after 30 days. Embrace makes you wait 6 months — unless your vet examines your pet within 14 days of enrollment and confirms no orthopedic issues, in which case the wait can be waived.

For large breeds prone to CCL tears and hip dysplasia, this difference matters significantly. A 30-day wait vs 6 months is the difference between a covered surgery and a $5,000 out-of-pocket expense.

Curable pre-existing conditions

Embrace will reconsider conditions that were previously excluded if your pet has been symptom-free and treatment-free for 12 months. A past ear infection, UTI, or skin flare-up that has fully resolved may become coverable over time.

Trupanion does not offer this. Once a condition is excluded, it stays excluded permanently.

If your pet has a history of minor, curable conditions: Embrace is significantly more valuable because those conditions may become coverable after a symptom-free period. With Trupanion, they are excluded forever.

Exam fees

Embrace covers exam fees as part of the claim. Trupanion does not — exam fees come out of your pocket every time. For a pet with frequent vet visits, this adds up quickly.

When to choose Trupanion

Your pet has one serious chronic condition (cancer, diabetes, severe allergies) that will require expensive recurring treatment. The per-condition deductible means you pay once and Trupanion covers 90% indefinitely — no annual deductible to meet again.

Also consider Trupanion if your pet is older and has a complex history where orthopedic issues are already documented — Trupanion's 30-day orthopedic wait is shorter than Embrace's 6 months.

When to choose Embrace

Your pet is young and healthy, may have minor past conditions you want to recover, or tends to have multiple different issues in a year. The annual deductible, exam fee coverage, and curable pre-existing clause make Embrace more flexible for most dogs and cats.

Embrace is also better if your pet is a large breed where the orthopedic waiver (with a clean vet exam at enrollment) can eliminate the 6-month wait entirely.
