📋 How to File a Trupanion Claim

1. Ask your vet if they use Trupanion's VetDirect Pay, over 25,000 hospitals do. If so, Trupanion pays the vet directly at checkout, often within seconds
2. If your vet does not use VetDirect Pay, log in to my.trupanion.com and submit manually
3. Upload the itemized invoice and complete medical records
4. Claims must be submitted within 90 days of treatment
5. Most non-VetDirect claims are processed within 24 hours
6. Reimbursement by check or direct deposit

⚠️ Common Reasons Trupanion Denies Claims

• Pre-existing conditions, Trupanion excludes any condition with prior symptoms, even if never formally diagnosed
• Exam fees, Trupanion does NOT cover exam fees in the base plan; you must add the Recovery and Complementary Care rider
• Dental illness, not covered in the base plan
• Treatments during the 5-day accident or 30-day illness waiting period, Trupanion has the longest illness waiting period in the industry
• Breeding costs, pregnancy, and elective procedures

💡 Tips for a Successful Trupanion Claim

• Trupanion uses a per-condition deductible, not annual. Once you meet the deductible for a condition, you never pay it again for that condition, great for chronic issues
• Trupanion covers hereditary and congenital conditions as long as they are not pre-existing, a major advantage for breed-prone conditions

• Trupanion does not reduce coverage as your pet ages, no birthday pricing, full 90% coverage from birth to 14 years
• If denied, check whether the denial cites a prior symptom vs a diagnosis, these are different and prior symptom denials are sometimes disputable with vet clarification
