Pet Insurance Waiting Periods Explained

Pet insurance waiting periods

One of the most common reasons pet insurance claims get denied is a waiting period violation. Pet owners enroll in a policy, their pet gets sick or injured within the first few weeks, and the claim is rejected because coverage hadn't kicked in yet.

Understanding waiting periods before you need to use your insurance โ€” not after โ€” can save you thousands of dollars and a lot of heartbreak.

What is a waiting period? A waiting period is the time between when your policy starts and when your coverage actually begins. Any condition that develops or shows symptoms during this window is typically excluded from coverage โ€” often permanently as a pre-existing condition.

Standard Waiting Periods

Most pet insurance companies use the same basic structure:

Waiting Periods by Major Pet Insurance Company

CompanyAccidentIllnessOrthopedic
Trupanion5 days30 days30 days
Embrace2 days14 days6 months
Healthy Paws15 days15 days15 days
Lemonade2 days14 days6 months
Nationwide14 days14 days14 days
ASPCA14 days14 days14 days
Spot3 days14 days14 days
Pets Best3 days14 days6 months

Note: Healthy Paws has one of the shortest overall waiting periods at 15 days across all categories. This can be a significant advantage if you need coverage quickly.

The Orthopedic Waiting Period Trap

The 6-month orthopedic waiting period is where most people get caught off guard. Here's why it matters:

Orthopedic conditions include cruciate ligament tears, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and patellar luxation. These are among the most expensive pet health issues, often costing $3,500 to $7,000 per surgery. And they're exactly the conditions that have a 6-month waiting period at many companies.

If your dog tears their ACL 4 months after you enroll, the claim will be denied. And depending on the insurer's policy on bilateral exclusions, the other knee might be excluded permanently even after the waiting period ends.

Can Waiting Periods Be Waived?

Some companies offer waiting period waivers under specific circumstances:

What Happens If Your Pet Gets Sick During the Waiting Period?

This is the painful scenario. If your pet shows symptoms of a condition during the waiting period, most insurers will:

  1. Deny the current claim because it occurred during the waiting period
  2. Potentially classify the condition as pre-existing, excluding it from all future coverage

This is why timing matters so much. Enrolling your pet when they are young and healthy โ€” before any conditions develop โ€” is the single best way to get the most from pet insurance.

Important: The waiting period clock starts from your policy effective date, not from when you signed up or paid. Make sure you know your exact effective date and plan accordingly.

Was Your Claim Denied Due to a Waiting Period?
